Supporting VoIP Services in IEEE 802.11e WLANs

چکیده
Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) over Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) is becoming popular thanks to its cost efficiency. However, it has been a challenge to provide good quality of VoIP services in WLANs, which is due mainly to (i) the nature of contention-based channel access of WLAN Medium Access Control (MAC); (ii) the presence of coexisting non-real-time data traffic; and (iii) the time-varying WLAN capacity caused by transmission rate diversity and variation of stations over time. In this paper, we propose a simple, effective and viable solution to improve the quality of VoIP services in 802.11e contention-based WLANs, which basically utilizes the advanced features of 802.11e MAC for QoS support. The key ingredients of our solution include (i) a priority queue to serve the VoIP traffic with higher priority than the non-realtime data traffic; and (ii) a conservative history-based admission control scheme for VoIP services, which accommodates the transmission rate diversity and variation of ongoing VoIP sessions over time. Simulation results demonstrate that our solution admits as many VoIP calls as possible without compromising the quality of their services.

Design of QoS and Admission Control for VoIP Services Over IEEE 802.11e WLANs
Supporting telephone services using wireless LAN as the access network is an emerging service. The SIP and IEEE 802.11e are perhaps the two most promising protocols to support such services. In this paper, we show how to integrate SIP and 802.11e to conduct call admission control and resource reservation to support VoIP’s QoS in IEEE 802.11e WLANs. Besides, we also suggest some adjustments and ...

IEEE 802.11 based wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) are fast becoming the standard in homes, businesses, and public hotspots. As well as supporting conventional Internet applications such as email, file transfer and web access, WLANs are increasingly required to support Quality of Service (QoS)-centric applications such as Voice over IP (VoIP) and Video over IP, which are delay sensitive and...
متن کاملSupporting VoIP Traffic in IEEE 802.11 WLAN with Enhanced Medium Access Control (MAC) for Quality of Service
With fast deployment of wireless local area networks (WLANs), the ability of WLAN to support real time services with stringent quality of service (QoS) requirements has come into fore. In this paper, we evaluate the capability of the enhanced point coordination function (EPCF) and enhanced distributed coordination function (EDCF), which are part of the medium access control (MAC) enhancements f...
متن کاملComparison of QoS Guarantee Techniques for VoIP over IEEE802.11 Wireless LAN
An emerging killer application for enterprise wireless LANs (WLANs) is voice over IP (VoIP) telephony, which promises to greatly improve the reachability and mobility of enterprise telephony service at low cost. None of the commercial IEEE 802.11 WLAN-based VoIP products can support more than ten G.729-quality voice conversations over a single IEEE 802.11b channel on real-world WLANs, even thou...
متن کاملAn Analytical Model for Capacity Evaluation of VoIP on HCCA and TCP File Transfers over EDCA in an IEEE 802.11e WLAN
In the context of the IEEE 802.11e standard for WLANs, we provide an analytical model for obtaining the maximum number of VoIP calls that can be supported on HCCA, such that the delay QoS constraint of the accepted calls is met, when TCP downloads are coexistent on EDCA. In this scenario, we derive the TCP download throughput by using an analytical model for the case where only TCP sessions are...
